The 1 page vs. 2 page resume debate

This is a well debated topic with technically no wrong answer as opinions vary so here is our take on the issue.

If you can explain what you do and have accomplished within one page that does say something about you. To many it says “communicates well, direct and to the point” while also indirectly taking into consideration the time a hiring manager spends reading resumes prior to a new hire. Short of senior level executives and those with long complicated academic accomplishments \ projects we try extremely hard to focus a resume down to one page. You are lucky if someone reads more than a 100 words total while reviewing your resume as very few read a resume word for word. Therefore, why not make it short with VERY high impact content?

Now some will say “you cannot sum up what I do on one page!” Well certainly that can be true. But using our recruiting experience we see it from a different perspective. If you are a Controller or even a Network Administrator, for the most part recruiters and hiring managers know what you do as it’s no mystery. You can bet that they will read the Professional \ Executive Summary. This is something we dedicate a lot of time to as it is what really sells you, convincing someone to read more.  After that point it comes down to scanning a resume for a few key items: keywords, accomplishments, position title, to see if they think you’re a fit.

Now when do you use a two page resume? Naturally high level executive style CV’s will be more than one page as the people reviewing them will take more time to read them because there are fewer qualified people in the stack to bog them down. When you’re working with a retained  executive recruiter  like JMJ Phillip, a large company may only see five resumes as that entire search process is different than a company with an ad on Monster that may receive 200-300+ resumes for a position. Who has time to read that many 2-3 page resumes for a mid-level position?

Other instances where a two page resume is standard are for some tech resumes. We still prefer a one page resume to sell yourself and get the attention of a hiring manger  but you can also add a second page listing the technologies you have worked with in the past. Although, some prefer to keep this as an entirely separate document.

Then you have cases where someone had 8 jobs over 12 years doing many different things as Staff Accounting from 1998 to 2002 then worked as a Buyer from 2002 to 2003 and as a Account Manager from 2004…well, you get the point. In that case you just have to do a really strong professional summary and accomplishment presentation up top and push that resume out to two pages to cover the mixture of experience. Now in some cases we can get very creative and make a semi chrono-functional resume and make all that work in one page. But, it is very difficult and not something we recommend someone to try when doing it on their own.

The reason we say there is no right answer is because you can ask friends what they do and one person will say they have used nothing but 2 page resumes over their career as a Purchasing Manager and they always get hired and another friend will say they use a one page  resume for their entire career as a Java Programmer and had great success.  Our own preference is to write high quality, high impact resumes that are as long as they need to be, since in this economy the better you look on paper, the better chance you have of getting the interview.

Companies Hiring - Microsoft

Microsoft hiring hundreds, despite layoffs

Paul Boutin, The Industry Standard03.30.2009

Developers developers developers! A search of Microsoft’s career database turns up 466 open jobs in Redmond. Most are software developer roles, but there are also open spots for product  managers, program managers, marketing managers, and user experience designers. Windows Mobile and gaming-related positions seem to dominate the list, along with Live services and non-product specific jobs.

Microsoft has cut thousands of employees this year. But like many corporations, Microsoft hasn’t combined its layoffs with a hiring freeze, despite rumors sparked by a leaked memo last fall. The company’s worldwide headcount is still above 80,000. In 2007, Microsoft grew its staff by 11,200. In that context, a few hundred open slots in Redmond alone aren’t very surprising.

Despite bad economic news all around, there are still ample employment opportunities for the right people at the right place and time. For many tech workers, 2009 will be the year they land their dream job.

Companies Hiring - Willard & Kelsey Solar

Solar Energy Firm to Start Production

(Source: The Blade)trackingBy Gary T. Pakulski, The Blade, Toledo, Ohio

Mar. 26–One year ago, a small group of veterans of Toledo’s glass and solar-panel production industries set up shop in a former television components factory in Perrysburg.

Now, it is making plans to begin commercial production of 2 million solar panels annually.

The company, Willard & Kelsey Solar Group LLC, earned a thumbs up from Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland yesterday.

After touring the 262,000-square foot plant off State Rt. 25, Mr. Strickland predicted the firm will become a “major player” in the solar-energy components industry.

“The fact that we have a new company like this with a highly efficient product to create energy … is very exciting,” Mr. Strickland said. Ohio officials are providing a $5 million economic development loan and a $500,000 grant to the company.

Willard & Kelsey is seeking $100 million in federal stimulus money to support a proposed $1.2 billion solar-panel manufacturing park in Perrysburg that it claims will create nearly 3,700 jobs.

For now, company officials are concentrating on the existing $14 million plant.

Willard & Kelsey had hoped to launch production last year, but was delayed by the nation’s credit crisis, Perrysburg municipal officials have been told.

But executives of the company, which is one of at least four firms making solar panels in metro Toledo or researching low-cost thin-film panel production here, say they are ready to move forward.

In his first extensive public comments, Chief Executive

William R. Mitchell said that trial production will begin in the coming weeks and that full-scale manufacturing will start in the next seven to eight months.

Hiring will be handled by the Wood County Department of Job and Family Services. The firm hopes to hire 400 employees by the end of 2009. The firm told the state the jobs would have an average wage of $21 an hour.

The firm’s panels, which will use low-cost technology similar to that used at a nearby factory of Arizona-based First Solar Inc., expects to submit the panels for certification next month to Underwriters Laboratory and other certifying organizations, Mr. Mitchell said.

He would not comment on whether the firm will be able to make panels more cheaply than First Solar, whose low-cost technology has made it one of the top producers in the world.

But Mr. Mitchell said the proprietary method used by Willard & Kelsey to chemically coat glass panels requires 70 percent less energy than the process at First Solar.

Willard & Kelsey expects to operate around the clock, Mr. Mitchell said.

The firm is in final discussions with an undisclosed prospective customer that is interested in buying all of the panels the firm can produce over the next two to three years, he added.

The Willard & Kelsey firm now employs 34 people. All, except Mr. Mitchell, are veterans of First Solar or Glasstech Inc., another Toledo company involved in the glass industry, the chief executive said. The late industrialist Harold McMaster, a pioneer in solar-panel technology, founded both First Solar and Glasstech.

Willard & Kelsey was started by Michael Cicak, a Glasstech veteran. Willard & Kelsey’s name comes from an intersection in East Toledo near where he grew up. Mr. Cicak serves as company chairman. James Appold, president of Consolidated Biscuit Co., is vice chairman. Company officials said a year ago they had $22 million from private investors.

The work of Mr. McMaster, pioneering research at the University of Toledo, and success of First Solar’s first plant in Perrysburg have earned Toledo a reputation as a leading center of low-cost solar panel technology.

Another firm, Xunlight Corp., plans to begin production in Toledo. And a unit of German solar giant Q-Cells AG has a research operation in Perrysburg
