Companies Hiring - Microsoft
Developers developers developers! A search of Microsoft’s career database turns up 466 open jobs in Redmond. Most are software developer roles, but there are also open spots for product managers, program managers, marketing managers, and user experience designers. Windows Mobile and gaming-related positions seem to dominate the list, along with Live services and non-product specific jobs.
Microsoft has cut thousands of employees this year. But like many corporations, Microsoft hasn’t combined its layoffs with a hiring freeze, despite rumors sparked by a leaked memo last fall. The company’s worldwide headcount is still above 80,000. In 2007, Microsoft grew its staff by 11,200. In that context, a few hundred open slots in Redmond alone aren’t very surprising.
Despite bad economic news all around, there are still ample employment opportunities for the right people at the right place and time. For many tech workers, 2009 will be the year they land their dream job.

Companies Hiring - Willard & Kelsey Solar
Solar Energy Firm to Start Production
(Source: The Blade)By Gary T. Pakulski, The Blade, Toledo, Ohio
Mar. 26–One year ago, a small group of veterans of Toledo’s glass and solar-panel production industries set up shop in a former television components factory in Perrysburg.
Now, it is making plans to begin commercial production of 2 million solar panels annually.
The company, Willard & Kelsey Solar Group LLC, earned a thumbs up from Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland yesterday.
After touring the 262,000-square foot plant off State Rt. 25, Mr. Strickland predicted the firm will become a “major player” in the solar-energy components industry.
“The fact that we have a new company like this with a highly efficient product to create energy … is very exciting,” Mr. Strickland said. Ohio officials are providing a $5 million economic development loan and a $500,000 grant to the company.
Willard & Kelsey is seeking $100 million in federal stimulus money to support a proposed $1.2 billion solar-panel manufacturing park in Perrysburg that it claims will create nearly 3,700 jobs.
For now, company officials are concentrating on the existing $14 million plant.
Willard & Kelsey had hoped to launch production last year, but was delayed by the nation’s credit crisis, Perrysburg municipal officials have been told.
But executives of the company, which is one of at least four firms making solar panels in metro Toledo or researching low-cost thin-film panel production here, say they are ready to move forward.
In his first extensive public comments, Chief Executive
William R. Mitchell said that trial production will begin in the coming weeks and that full-scale manufacturing will start in the next seven to eight months.
Hiring will be handled by the Wood County Department of Job and Family Services. The firm hopes to hire 400 employees by the end of 2009. The firm told the state the jobs would have an average wage of $21 an hour.
The firm’s panels, which will use low-cost technology similar to that used at a nearby factory of Arizona-based First Solar Inc., expects to submit the panels for certification next month to Underwriters Laboratory and other certifying organizations, Mr. Mitchell said.
He would not comment on whether the firm will be able to make panels more cheaply than First Solar, whose low-cost technology has made it one of the top producers in the world.
But Mr. Mitchell said the proprietary method used by Willard & Kelsey to chemically coat glass panels requires 70 percent less energy than the process at First Solar.
Willard & Kelsey expects to operate around the clock, Mr. Mitchell said.
The firm is in final discussions with an undisclosed prospective customer that is interested in buying all of the panels the firm can produce over the next two to three years, he added.
The Willard & Kelsey firm now employs 34 people. All, except Mr. Mitchell, are veterans of First Solar or Glasstech Inc., another Toledo company involved in the glass industry, the chief executive said. The late industrialist Harold McMaster, a pioneer in solar-panel technology, founded both First Solar and Glasstech.
Willard & Kelsey was started by Michael Cicak, a Glasstech veteran. Willard & Kelsey’s name comes from an intersection in East Toledo near where he grew up. Mr. Cicak serves as company chairman. James Appold, president of Consolidated Biscuit Co., is vice chairman. Company officials said a year ago they had $22 million from private investors.
The work of Mr. McMaster, pioneering research at the University of Toledo, and success of First Solar’s first plant in Perrysburg have earned Toledo a reputation as a leading center of low-cost solar panel technology.
Another firm, Xunlight Corp., plans to begin production in Toledo. And a unit of German solar giant Q-Cells AG has a research operation in Perrysburg

Companies Hiring - PODS Hiring 116
CLEARWATER, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–PODS Enterprises has experienced solid business gains, leading the company to hire an additional 116 employees for its Clearwater headquarters and other locations across the U.S. and Canada to accommodate its growth in the moving and storage industry.
“PODS is doing very well, that’s why we’re hiring 116 people,” said Lisa Goettel, Senior Vice President of PODS’ Human Resources division. “Most new hires will be stationed in our call center, earning between $35,000 and $50,000 per year.”
A monthly report from the State of Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation indicates the only sectors to see job growth are health care, education, and government. All other industries reported staffing declines, the state said*. This makes PODS something of an anomaly – bucking the trend to expand during a recession.
“Consumers are shopping around more to find the best value for their money and discovering there is an easier way to move and store their belongings,” said Thomas A. Ryan, Jr., PODS’ President and Chief Executive Officer. “Plus, PODS’ convenience and flexibility is appealing, because we bring the container right to the customer, and they can take all the time they need to load and unload. With PODS, the customer is in control, they can keep their container at their location, at one of our secure Storage Centers, or have us move it just about anywhere in the country.”
Founded in 1998, the PODS network currently provides services to 48 U.S. states and throughout Canada and Australia. PODS attributes its growth to the flexibility and value it provides consumers. To date, the company has completed more than 200,000 long-distance moves, exceeded one million deliveries and has over 137,000 PODS® containers in service.
“We welcome applicants to apply for a career with PODS,” Goettel said. “Prospective employees can go to our website at pods.com/careeropportunities.asp to learn more about career opportunities at our corporate headquarters in Florida and in cities across the U.S. and Canada.”

Companies Hiring - U.S. Census Bureau
Census to Provide 750 Jobs in Three Weeks
Source: http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/13289/
UPPER MARLBORO, Maryland―The U.S. unemployment rate rose to 8.1% in February. Many big corporations have announced further layoffs. Uncle Sam is one of the few entities still hiring. Among the federal agencies, U.S. Census has started full-scale recruitment to carry out the 2010 Census. The census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution and takes place every 10 years.
On Saturday, Feb. 28, about 50 residents joined the community forum at Mount Ephraim Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Congresswoman Donna Edwards co-hosted the forum with the U.S. Census Bureau to inform residents of the 2010 Census and job openings at the Bureau.
According to Albert Mundy, the Assistant Manager of Operations at the Census Bureau, Census will hire 750 people in the next three weeks.
The immediate need is to make sure all postal addresses in the Census database are up-to-date. The short form mailing will start in February/March 2010. This is the most economic data collection method for the Bureau. The last census was done in 2000, and so a lot of addresses need to be updated.
The immediate job openings are for junior positions. The salaries range from $14 to $21 per hour. The U.S. Census Bureau web site lists some jobs in information technology (IT). Later, Census will have more managerial positions. Some positions do not require U.S. citizenship. All applications are handled through 1-866-861-2010.
There are a lot of trust issues involved in collecting personnel data. To get minorities’ cooperation, Census prefers to use representatives from different communities to facilitate communication and trust. Hence, bilingual candidates have competitive advantages for some positions.
One can also find IT jobs at http://www.census.gov/hrd/www /index.html. For data entry jobs, applicants need to pass a simple basic computer skills test. Audience member raised the issue of illegal immigrants. Dorothy Wilson, Partnership Specialist with the Census Bureau, said that the 2010 census targets all residents in order to get an accurate picture of the numbers and statuses of residents in the United States.
The U.S. Government needs to know, regardless of immigration status, the demands people are making on transportation, schools and other public facilities. Census data is used by the federal government in determining budget allocation and infrastructure planning. Congresswoman Donna Edwards also said that Census, by law, does not share data with immigration offices. Therefore, illegal immigrants need not worry in the slightest about incurring trouble by participating in the 2010 census.
Some audience members wondered how housing data will be collected when the 2010 census uses the short form and doesn’t ask detailed information on housing. Ms. Wilson’s answer was that particular information was more efficiently collected by sampling residents through the American Community Survey (ACS
